The more we become aware of our bodies and the subtle sensations within our bodies, the more present we become.
When we are grounded in our bodies we tap into a great source of wisdom that gives us the opportunity to be more authentic. Mindfulness is our greatest teacher in life. When we are deeply rooted in the NOW we connect to ourselves on all levels physical and spiritual. As you go about your day pay attention to how you are present. What keeps you present and what propels you into the past or future?
Too often we are distracted by technology. We are over-sensitized, overstimulated and overwhelmed with all this serotonin induced pleasure. It activates the cognitive parts of the brain that are more about being in the mind rather than FEELING in the body. The mind becomes the puppeteer of the body. So we are thinking our way through life instead of feeling our way through life. When we separate our selves from our emotions we are also separating ourselves from our emotional life. When we separate from our emotional life and we don’t experience the physical expression of our emotions it is very hard for us to understand what it feel like to be present and to actually know and process our feelings. This leads to not understanding why we do what we do.
Well…who wants to feel pain and discomfort? No one! BUT if we don’t allow ourselves to feel at those times, we loose the full aspect of who we are. FEELING can be very FREEING. Our bodies provide us with a tremendous amount of knowledge and if you tune into it, you will understand where you carry stress and then you have the power to relax it and release it. If you don’t know what you are feeling you can’t let the tension go and then…it builds.
Buddha said, ”…mindfulness in the body leaves you safe — most importantly - safe from yourself…”
Our bodies are like big antennae to our surroundings…always picking up signals and information and responding to the external world that surrounds us. To be aware of our bodies is a pausing action…The mind brings so much momentum in our lives…In order to feel more inspired and motivated we need to SHOW UP in our bodies.
We are feeling beings but we let our minds take control of our emotions and think our way out of feeling a certain way. This again, leads to confusion and disconnection. Since we have strong emotional tendencies (whether we express them or not) the way we think is the very thing that keeps us from feeling.
The body is very smart - it is constantly working to function, heal and replenish you on a regular basis. The body knows how to heal but if we let our minds take over we tend to bring more tension to that situation…Through meditation we can sit with the feelings and sensations that are present and create a strong connection between mind and body. As your physical sensations begin to relax there is less energy going to the thinking mind…which in turn allows the body to dissolve the issues or problems we are facing rather than solving the problems with our minds.
Solving happens in the mind….dissolving happens in the body.
Today, take a moment to be present with yourself.
Find a comfortable place where you can close your eyes and begin to feel your body…scanning your body from head to toe and noticing sensations. These sensations can be pleasant and delightful or you may experience discomfort and awkwardness. Either way, you are experiencing you. Let it happen and use your breath to stay grounded in your body. Starting with the 3 most receptive areas of our bodies which are our hands, feet and mouth enables our whole body to relax. Then you become more still and can begin your internal journey. Moving through the 3 most receptive areas inside us which are the breath, the heart and circulation and the digestive system. Here is a meditation to get you started.
As you go about your day, ask yourself, “What sensations do I feel in this moment?”
Continue this practice everyday. The more consistent you are with your mindfulness and body awareness practice the more you will become connected to yourself and each moment which will give you clarity. Remember you are your own guru…Take a moment to listen and FEEL.
